Aunty’s Alcove - Antifreeze
It will soon be time to think about preparing our beloved Singers for the winter, and unless you have the luxury of a heated garage, one of the most important things to check is the coolant antifreeze mixture.
First, I would strongly recommended that you do not drain the cooling system and leave it empty - the antifreeze contains rust and corrosion inhibitors, and if left exposed to the atmosphere, the internal surfaces of the system will probably rust or corrode, and could cause problems when you eventually refill the system.
If you have had to top up the radiator during the summer, you will need to check that the mixture is at the recommended strength. Antifreeze testers are available for as little as £2.
If you have not changed the coolant for 2 or 3 years I would recommend you do so now, as the corrosion inhibitors do break down over time. But whether you are renewing the antifreeze or simply topping up to the recommended Specific Gravity, it is most important to use only BLUE coloured Antifreeze to an IAT (Inorganic Additive Technology) specification. Nevermix Blue with Orange or Green antifreeze.
